Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
